How Swedes celebrate Christmas
Before sunrise on the darkest time of year, a girl in a white gown and a crown of candles leads a procession singing the Lucia song. It’s celebrated in schools, workplaces and churches all over Sweden, usually with coffee, gingerbread and saffron buns.
Golden, S-shaped buns flavoured with saffron and topped with raisins. Swedes bake them all through December, especially around Lucia. Find a picture and you’ll know them anywhere.
Swedes celebrate Christmas on the 24th, not the 25th, with a huge buffet called julbord. Think Christmas ham, meatballs, pickled herring, small sausages, Jansson’s temptation (a creamy potato and anchovy bake) and rice pudding for dessert. Whoever finds the hidden almond in the pudding is said to get married next year.
Every Christmas Eve at 3pm, much of Sweden sits down to watch the same Donald Duck Christmas special. It has aired on Swedish TV every year since 1959, and plenty of families plan their whole day around it.
A dark, sweet soda made with malt and hops that’s only really sold at Christmas (and Easter, when it’s called påskmust). It’s so popular that it often outsells Coca-Cola in Sweden in December.
